INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES EDUCATION ACT

The IDEA mandates that all children with disabilities receive a “free appropriate public education and related services needed to meet each child’s unique needs.” Illinois requires every school district have programs in place to guarantee all children ages 3-21 the right to a FAPE. A FAPE requires that the school district provides the child’s special education and related services at public expense, without charge to the parent or guardian.

Your child may be eligible for services under the IDEA if he or she suffers from any of the following special needs:

  1. Mental retardation
  2. Deafness or hearing impairment
  3. Blindness or visual impairment
  4. Emotional disturbance
  5. Autism
  6. Speech or language impairment
  7. Traumatic brain injury
  8. Orthopedic impairment
  9. Health impairment
  10. Specific learning disability
